The legal situation
In Austria, abortion on request is not punishable up to the 16th week of pregnancy (within three months after implantation) under the applicable legal provisions, even if there is no medical indication. One prerequisite for an abortion without criminal liability is that medical counselling takes place before the procedure and that the abortion is performed by a doctor.
An abortion at the woman’s request is a private service in Austria. This means that the costs must be paid by the woman or couple themselves. No personal data is forwarded to the social insurance provider or other institutions.
The woman’s country of residence is also irrelevant: women and couples from other countries can have an abortion in Austria within the first three months of pregnancy.

In my practice, I offer the following option:
Medical abortion within the legal time limit (without a medical indication)
When?
Usually from the 5th week of pregnancy up to and including the 9th week of pregnancy (up to day 63), calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period.
Where?
At my practice, following an ultrasound examination, a detailed medical history and comprehensive counselling. Among other things, the gestational age is determined and suitability for a medical abortion is assessed.
How?
A medical abortion is carried out using two different medications, taken approximately 24–48 hours apart:
Mifegyne® (active ingredient: mifepristone)
Cytotec®/Topogyne® (active ingredient: misoprostol).
An ultrasound examination is usually performed 1–2 weeks after taking the medication to confirm that the abortion is complete.
A medical abortion may be associated with lower abdominal cramps and heavier bleeding. Appropriate pain medication can be used if necessary.
Cost: € 350.-
€ 380.- if Rhesus prophylaxis is required
Financial assistance
If the cost of an abortion represents a financial burden, financial assistance may be available. Under certain conditions, an application for cost coverage or financial support can be made through Changes for women ↗ and MA 40 der Stadt Wien↗
